Throughout December I’ll be sharing some of my favourite things with you about Normandy. The first ‘window’ of my Normandy advent calendar is Coutances cathedral. I took this picture from the Eastern facade on a beautifully sunny November day. What you see today is a magnificent expression of Norman Gothic art which dates from the early 13th century. Large parts of the original 11th century Romanesque cathedral remain and you can take a tour to explore these rarely-seen corridors and the high walkways leading to the lantern tower. I can highly recommend it. I took the tour in English and spent most of my time taking photos and absorbing the calm and beauty of this remarkable building. Alternatively, you can explore the cathedral at ground level with an audio guide which is available from the tourist office.
