The October Gavray Fair

Looking for ideas for what to do during October in Normandy? A weekend in mid to late October is when La Foire Saint-Luc. The fair is held just outside Gavray and is a typical Normandy country fair.

More than 600 exhibitors and 100,000 visitors are usually expected over the three days. The fair is one of the oldest in La Manche and dates from the late 12th century. Cattle, horses, dogs and poultry are on display together. Other entertainment will include country dancing.

And don’t miss the tent displaying the pumpkins. There’s an annual pumpkin decorating competition with categories for different ages and also adults. The weekend before the fair is the time to buy your pumpkin. The market stalls in Gavray do a roaring trade.

For foodies, there will be food tents galore and cookery demonstrations. Catering vans selling sausage and chips are very popular here. Just follow your nose to find them. Practical Information

Sturdy footwear is recommended as the fair is held in a field. There is parking nearby or ask about shuttle buses. They are called navettes and usually run from one of the Gavray car parks.
