Chinese Restaurant in Normandy

A Chinese restaurant in Normandy may not seem very French but with the start of the Chinese New Year approaching then why not?

The popularity of eating at a Chinese restaurant in Normandy is increasing. Ten years ago it was a relatively new concept. And while there aren’t as many Chinese restaurants as in the UK, for example, they’re becoming more widespread.

I tried out the Royal Wok in Saint-Lô with a group of friends. The restaurant has been under new ownership for a couple of years and aims to provide quality food at a good price. The restaurant is fairly large and can therefore take groups.

The Royal Wok offer a buffet style system and you can eat as much as you want. You can keep going up to the food counters as often as you like. The dishes are topped up regularly with a steady stream of food being created in the kitchen.

The photo above is of the sushi on offer which was delicious. There is a Japanese section but the rest of the menu is predominantly Chinese. Hot starters are also available and include spring rolls, dim sum and chicken wings. Main dishes include sweet and sour chicken, spicy beef and hot prawns. Side dishes include seaweed, coleslaw, rice and noodles. If you’d like to create your own dish, then there’s a choice of raw vegetables, meat and seafood. You place what you want on a plate and then take it over to the wok area. Once you’ve select the sauce to be added the chef will cook your meal while you watch.

If you have room for dessert, then just head back up to the central food counter. The same buffet style operates here too. There was a choice of ice creams, yoghurt, chocolate brownie, mini eclairs, fruit salad, ile flottante (meringue with custard).

Practical Information

Royal Wok is based on Avenue de Paris, ZI la Capelle, 50000 Saint-Lô. They’re open 7 days a week from 12 – 2pm and 7 – 10pm. The cost for the buffet is 11,90€ at lunchtimes from Monday to Friday. At weekend lunchtimes and every evening it’s 16,90€. Children from 1 – 6 years old pay 4€ and those aged 7 – 11 are charged 8,80€. Prices were correct as of February 2020.
